POST GATHERING WORKSHOP
Making Data Dance:
Participatory Data Gathering and Analysis
Monday PM, January 11, 2016 2:00 PM - 5:30 PM, and 8:30 - noon January 12, 2016
“I was just pondering how to make a data report more interesting for a client meeting and pulled out my Making Data Dance materials yet again. There were so many creative ideas in this course about how to engage people in both the collection and reporting of data – it’s been a treasure trove of creative sparks and concrete examples in my work. Since taking this course, I’ve had so much fun developing ways to make the “data” portion of an environmental scan a participatory engagement tool. I’m still mining the course materials and colleague conversations from this course, and am shifting how I approach data collection, summary and sharing as a result.” Brigid Riley, MPH, 2015 ToP Conference MDD Course Participant
Ever been bored to death by the tedious review of data? Ever been awash in data and yet have no useful information on which to make decisions or act? Learn how to design lively and useful data review sessions with full participant engagement.
The dictionary definition of data is -- "data - facts, figures, etc., known or available; information". Typically clients hire people to gather date which they then present to a planning team. Sometimes the consultant's report has impact but often it doesn't. This course suggests a different approach. You design a process for your client to gather and analyze the data.
The Aims of this course are to help us as ToP Facilitators make data gathering and review a powerful, useful experience for the groups we serve.
- Explore the use of ToP methods in data/information review sessions
- Experience the power and impact of using participatory processes for data review and analysis
- Learn key design principles for gathering and reviewing data to use in group review and analysis sessions
Three case studies will illustrate ways to help structure data gathering and sharing. One of the case studies introduces a powerful way to get and review customer/stakeholder input on requirements and the degree to which those requirements are met.
Participants are encouraged to bring and share their own situations that involve data gathering and review. * This is an advanced course that requires the ToP® Facilitation Methods course.
Jane Stallman, a ToP® mentor trainer and senior partner at the Center for Strategic Facilitation in the SF Bay Area, developed and teaches this course. Jane has a broad based consulting practice and uses these methods with her clients.
This course is a locally developed course that is not part of the nationally branded ToP curriculum. It is a specialized application of Focus Conversation and Consensus Workshop methods.
You are welcome to email or call Jane for more information. You can reach her at 510.532.6595, or click here.
TFM is a requirement for participation.
